VERSES 1-3: THE RARITY OF KNOWING KṚṢṆA
7.1
Lord Kṛṣṇa says:
Now listen Arjuna, how one can have full knowledge of Me without any doubts, by dedicating his yoga practise to Me, and absorbing his mind on Me.
śrī bhagavān uvāca
mayyāsakta manāḥ pārtha yogaṁ yuñjan madāśrayaḥ |
asaṁśayaṁ samagraṁ māṁ yathā jñāsyasi tacchṛṇu || 1 ||
7.2
I will explain this knowledge to you fully, along with the process of its immediate realisation. Once you understand this, there is nothing else that needs to be known.
jñānaṁ te’haṁ savijñānam idaṁ vakṣyāmy-aśeṣataḥ |
yajjñātvā neha bhūyo’nyajjñātavyam avaśiṣyate || 2 ||
7.3
Among thousands of men, perhaps one strives for perfection; even among those who strive for perfection, only one may know Me; and among those who know Me, maybe one alone knows Me in truth.
manuṣyāṇāṁ sahasreṣu kaścid yatati siddhaye |
yatatām-api siddhānāṁ kaścin māṁ vetti tattvataḥ || 3 ||
VERSES 4-6: THE HIGHER AND LOWER NATURES OF GOD
7.4
Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect, and the ego; make up the eight parts of My material nature.
bhūmir-āpo’nalo vāyuḥ khaṁ mano buddhir-eva ca |
ahaṅkāra itīyaṁ me bhinnā prakṛtir-aṣṭadhā || 4 ||
7.5
This is My lower nature. But, Arjuna, know that My higher nature is different. It is made up of the embodied souls, which sustain this universe.
apareyamitastvanyāṁ prakṛtiṁ viddhi me parām |
jīvabhūtāṁ mahābāho yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat || 5 ||
7.6
Know that all beings originate from these two natures of mine. Understand therefore that I am the origin and the dissolution of this whole universe.
etad-yonīni bhūtāni sarvāṇītyupadhāraya |
ahaṁ kṛtsnasya jagataḥ prabhavaḥ pralayastathā || 6 ||
VERSES 7-12: KṚṢṆA‘S TRANSCENDENCE AND IMMANENCE
7.7
There is nothing higher than Me, O Arjuna. All of this rests upon Me, like pearls on a thread.
mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat kiñcid-asti dhanañjayaḥ |
mayi sarvam idaṁ protaṁ sūtre maṇi-gaṇā iva || 7 ||
7.8
I am the taste of water; I am the radiance of the Sun and Moon. I am the sacred syllable oṁ in the Vedas; I am the sound in ether, and the valour in men.
raso’ham-apsu kaunteya prabhāsmi śaśi-sūryayo |
praṇavaḥ sarva vedeṣu śabdaḥ khe pauruṣaṁ nṛṣu || 8 ||
7.9
I am the fragrance of the earth; I am the heat of fire; I am the life of all living beings, and the austerity of ascetics.
puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛthivyāṁ ca tejaścāsmi vibhāvasau |
jīvanaṁ sarva bhūteṣu tapaścāsmi tapasviṣu || 9 ||
7.10
Know Me, Arjuna, to be the original seed of all beings. I am the intelligence of the intelligent, and the energy of the energetic.
bījaṁ māṁ sarva bhūtānāṁ viddhi pārtha sanātanaṁ |
buddhir-buddhimatām asmi tejas-tejasvinām aham || 10 ||
7.11
O Arjuna, I am the strength of the strong which is without passion and desire. I am that desire in all living beings which does not go against righteous principles.
balaṁ balavatāṁ cāhaṁ kāma-rāga vivarjitam |
dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo’smi bharatarṣabha || 11 ||
7.12
Know that all the states of sattva, rajas, and tamas have their origin in Me alone. But I am not in them; they are in Me.
ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasāstāmasāśca ye |
matta eveti tān-viddhi na tvahaṁ teṣu te mayi || 12 ||
VERSES 13-15: SURRENDER ALLOWS US TO CROSS OVER MĀYĀ
7.13
The entire universe is deluded by these three conditions originating from the guṇas, and fails to recognize Me, who is unchanging and beyond.
tribhir-guṇa-mayair-bhāvair-ebhiḥ sarvam idaṁ jagat |
mohitaṁ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ param-avyayam || 13 ||
7.14
For this divine māyā of Mine consisting of the three guṇas is hard to overcome. But those who take refuge in Me alone, cross over it easily.
daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā |
māmeva ye prapadyante māyāmetāṁ taranti te || 14 ||
7.15
But the unrighteous, the foolish, the lowest of people, those whose wisdom has been stolen away by māyā and those who have taken the nature of demons, do not seek refuge in Me.
na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ |
māyayāpahṛta jñānā āsuraṁ bhāvam āśritāḥ || 15 ||
VERSES 16-22: FOUR CATEGORIES OF DEVOTEES
7.16
Four types of devotees worship Me, O Arjuna: The distressed, the seekers of knowledge, those who desire wealth, and the jñānī who truly has knowledge.
catur-vidhā bhajante māṁ janāḥ sukṛtino’rjuna |
ārto jijñāsur arthārthī jñānī ca bharatarṣabha || 16 ||
7.17
Of these, the jñānī who is steadfast and ever-devoted is the best. I am very dear to him and he is dear to Me.
teṣāṁ jñānī nitya-yukta eka bhaktir-viśiṣyate |
priyo hi jñānino’tyartham ahaṁ sa ca mama priyaḥ || 17 ||
7.18
Those who approach Me are all noble people, but I see the jñānī as My very Self, for such a person is steady and exclusively devoted to Me as the highest goal.
udārāḥ sarva evaitaṁ jñānī tvātmaiva me matam |
āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā māmevānuttamāṁ gatim || 18 ||
7.19
At the end of many births, the one who has true knowledge surrenders to Me, realizing that ‘Kṛṣṇa is everything’. Such a person is very rare.
bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān māṁ prapadyate |
vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ || 19 ||
7.20
Enslaved by their inherent nature, and deprived of insight by various desires, the worldly-minded turn to other demigods, observing various disciplines.
kāmais tais tair hṛta-jñānāḥ prapadyante’nya-devatāḥ |
taṁ taṁ niyamam āsthāya prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā || 20 ||
7.21
Understand that whichever manifestation of a demigod any devotee desires to worship with faith, it is I that makes that faith unshakeable and firm.
yo yo yāṁ yāṁ tanuṁ bhaktaḥ śraddhayārcitum icchati |
tasya tasyācalāṁ śraddhāṁ tām-eva vidadhāmy-ahaṁ || 21 ||
7.22
Endowed with that faith, one engages in the worship of a particular demigod, obtaining their desired objects, but these objects are in fact given by Me alone.
sa tayā śraddhayā yuktas tasyārādhanam īhate |
labhate ca tataḥ kāmān mayaiva vihitān hi tān || 22 ||
VERSE 23: WHAT YOU WORSHIP DETERMINES YOUR DESTINATION
7.23
But the reward gained by these people of limited understanding is temporary. The worshippers of the demigods will go to the demigods, but My devotees will come to Me.
antavattu phalaṁ teṣāṁ tad bhavaty-alpa medhasām |
devān devayajo yānti mad-bhaktā yānti mām api || 23 ||
VERSES 24-30: PERCEIVING THE TRUTH OF KṚṢṆA
7.24
Not knowing My higher nature as imperishable and supreme, the ignorant think of Me as an impersonal being who has now become manifest.
avyaktaṁ vyaktim āpannaṁ manyante mām abuddhayaḥ |
paraṁ bhāvam ajānanto mamāvyayam anuttamam || 24 ||
7.25
I do not reveal Myself to everybody, but I cover Myself with My yogamāyā. This deluded world does not recognize Me as unborn and infallible.
nāhaṁ prakāśaḥ sarvasya yoga māyā samāvṛtaḥ |
mūḍho’yaṁ nābhijānanti loko mām ajam avyayam || 25 ||
7.26
O Arjuna, I know all the beings that have come before, that are here now, and those that have yet to come; but no one knows Me.
vedāhaṁ samatītāni vartamānāni cārjuna |
bhaviṣyāṇi ca bhūtāni māṁ tu veda na kaścana || 26 ||
7.27
Bewildered by the pairs of opposites, Arjuna, which arise from desire and aversion, all beings are born into delusion.
icchā-dveṣa samutthena dvandva mohena bhārata |
sarva bhūtāni saṁmohaṁ sarge yānti paraṅtapa || 27 ||
7.28
But those who perform virtuous deeds, whose sins have ceased, are freed from the illusion of the pairs of opposites. They worship Me, steadfast in their determination.
yeṣāṁ tvanta-gataṁ pāpaṁ janānāṁ puṇya-karmaṇām |
te dvandva-moha-nirmuktā bhajante māṁ dṛḍha-vratāḥ || 28 ||
7.29
Those who take refuge in Me and strive for liberation from old age and death, fully understand Brahman, adhyātma, and karma.
jarā-maraṇa-mokṣayā mām-āśritya yatanti ye |
te brahma tad viduḥ kṛtsnam adhyātmaṁ karma cākhilam || 29 ||
7.30
And those who know Me in relation to the adhibhūta, adhidaiva, and the adhiyajña, they too with their minds fixed, can know Me even at the hour of death.
sādhibhūtādhidaivaṁ māṁ sādhi yajñāṁ ca ye viduḥ |
prayāṇa kāle’pi ca māṁ te vidur yukta cetasaḥ || 30 ||
